It acts as aGateway that limits access between networks in accordance with local security policy to block unwanted users accessing your network at any time
2A firewall is a hardware or software solution to enforce security policies. In the physical security analogy, a firewall is equivalent to a door lock on a perimeter door or on a door to a room inside of the building - it permits only authorized users such as those with a key or access card to enter. A firewall has built-in filters that can disallow unauthorized or potentially dangerous material from entering the system. It also logs attempted intrusions.

A firewall blocks unwanted communications on a network or networked device. They range from simple such as the firewall in windows which blocks incoming attempts to open communication ports on your system, but does nothing to keep your spyware infested computer from sending out information, to highly sophisticated stand alone devices.

A firewall is protection for your internet connection that doesn't allow others to use it. If you have a wireless internet connection, it's a good idea to put up a firewall, that way other people with wireless capability cannot use your network (which can slow it down).

A firewall is a program that tracks all network traffic and checks to see if it should be allowed or not based on rules you set. It allows programs to use the network if you tell it to allow the program, but if you haven't told it to allow the traffic, it will either prompt you whether the program should, or just block it by default.

A firewall is a program on your computer that restricts access to it from the outside, such as someone hacking your computer. It covers your ports, which are possible hacker passageways and makes your computer safer, I think.

Its something like a "wall" or "gate" that protects you from hackers/data stealers when ur connected to the internet. Just imagine your home with a door. Without a door, theives can enter your home as and when they like. =)
