Shakespearean authorship

This portrait, called the Chandos portrait, hangs in the National Portrait Gallery. It is generally assumed to be a depiction of William Shakespeare, but this identification is not universally accepted.Around one hundred and fifty years after William Shakespeare's death in 1616, doubts began to be expressed by some about the authorship of the plays and poetry attributed to him. The term Shakespearean authorship normally refers to the conspiracy theory propounded by these doubters; it should be distinguished from the less contentious academic debates about what exactly Shakespeare wrote in the collaborative world of the Elizabethan theatre.
