my mum washed a sheepskin rug and it came out in shreds but when gran washed hers it came out all curly so t had to be brushed, got no clue why your washer won't work but as people have already answered it could be some wool stuck
ps get someone to look at it, i wouldn't try myself, i'd probably break it more lol
pps next time you/your wife wash it, try putting it in a (closed) quilt cover or something similar then it might not get tangled anywhere

Its probably choked with lint - check if there is a trap release door at the bottom (usually bottom front) of the machine which can be opened for you to clear the chokage. Otherwise, check the manual or call the service guy for advise.

can't have done the filters any good, but it's done now, check the filters, as some washers will not start until the water level is at a certain height, so perhaps the filters are blocked, worth a look.

Check the lint trap. If its an energy efficient machine it won't have one, you have to tilt the machine, get a bowl underneath, open the hatch, undo the clip and empty the sump. Once you've seen it done you'll realise you can do this yourself.

the rug was probably too heavy and knocked the washer off balance

It's probably just off balance...move the barrel around a little and try again. Best wishes

Sounds blocked.
Take the top off and unclip the internal hoses. You should be able to clear any blockages yourself.
