You didn't say how long of a trip plan?
But say if you Live in Santa Fe, NM. and you are traveling to Los Angeles, Ca.
The first thing you could do is to find out the mileage. (either on the internet, or there is a graph page in the back of a Rand-Mcnally atlas.)
You would then take the mileage and divide it by the Miles per gallon that you get in your car, to figure out how much gas it's going to take you to get there. Take the avg. cost of gas and multiply the number of gallons and you would then have your cost of the fuel.
Then you would take the milage again, and avg speed of 60mph, and see how many hours of driving time the trip would take.
Estimate how many hours a day that you will be driving, so you can figure your travel time, meal stops, gas stops, and motels.
Take the map and plan the daily milage for your motel stops, and call ahead to them for prices and reservations.
You can also keep a daily travel log as you go to record your expenses, and know to the exact penny what your trip expenses were.
Hope this helps!

Decide where you are going TO.
Think about where you are.
What roads will you need to take?
Are there things you want to avoid, like places with bad traffic back-ups? you don't need a map if it is an area you know.
if you mean a long trip, like cross country, it is pretty much the same. But you decide how far you want to drive each day, if there are interesting places you want to see on the way, where you want to stay. It would be best to have a map on a long trip.
