~*~ Space Station ~*~

We have already built one and are currently in the process of renovating it. We are also planning on increasing the number of astronauts on the International Space Station.

~*~ The Moon ~*~

..:: the GOOD side ::..
At first sight, I'm sure every one of us finds the moon an excellent place to live on. I mean, there’s a bunch of minerals out there that can be harnessed once the Earth's natural resources are gone. And from the moon, there would be less pollution so the chances of catching sight of a comet would be much higher. The Milky Way would be much more visible and perhaps we would start appreciating the wonder of stars.

The gravity of the moon is one third our planet's and obviously, the fuel required for take off would be lesser. Astronauts would feel less pressure while in the cockpit and they can adjust to the anti-gravity much easier (and faster).

..:: the NOT SO BRIGHT side ::..

However, I'm sure no one wants to see a half eaten moon, with all its minerals dug out. I don't want to bring my kids to the NASA museum and say: hey kids, when I was young the moon was round. Now it’s like a bitten cooky, the space monster is coming to get us!

Besides, Humans are adjusted for the Earth's atmospheric pressure and gravity. Any long term changes to that will result in slight mental problems. Also, there is no air on the moon. This would mean that no sound can be heard, so if an asteroid smashes right beside me, I wouldn't even hear it.

Worst of all, there is no atmosphere on the moon. This means that we would not be protected from the Sun’s Ultra violet rays and radiation. This would increase the probability of skin cancer and unknown mutations. There would also be no atmosphere to act as a barrier for approaching meteoroids. Why do you think the moon has so many craters?

~*~ Final Decision ~*~

Well, I guess the cons outweigh the benefits and only till we manage to create an artificial atmosphere for the moon, we did be able to inhabit it. Also, like what campbelp2002 said, the main reason we went to the moon was to prove that the communist regime was not as good as ours and we could do way better. Besides, who’s going to get the funds necessary to fuel the expedition?

Despite what was speculated for a long time, the moon simply has no financial benefits beyond the advances made at the time technologically for getting there. The computers used to get there in the 70s pale in comparison to a standard basic cell phone of today.

It is now believed that Carbon 13, abundant on the moon and rare on Earth, may represent a large source of future energy needs so a return there to mine it may be valuable. In addition, using the moon as a jumping off point for a trip to Mars may prove useful in the future (though this is not really that valuable considering the distances between the Earth, the moon and Mars).

It's spending a lot of money for little to no benefits so there's no way to build a reasonable cost-benefits model.

Not that we have given up the attempt. We are at it but you would appreciate that howsoever we may like to hasten unless we study the problem fromall angles and build machines accordngly this cannot be done. The time it will take cannot be precisely known. Now even India is thinking of sending a man on the moon. Perhaps, before long we may have established a colony on the moon.Wish them Good Luck

Takes a long time to get there.

Got interested in other things.

We have a rudimentary space station.

There is a lot to space travel. You can't just send people up there and expect a space station to get built, or the moon to be colonized.

Ask why we haven't colonized the ocean floor. It's right here. We understand the environment. Transportaiton to and from would be easier.

Well -- we have been back for further exploration. Several missions went to the moon.

We just haven't been back recently.

I've also thought it would be cool to have a space station on the moon.

The reason we went to the moon (the real reason) is to prove to the world that we could do better in space than the communist Soviets, even though they put the first satellite and first man in orbit. We succeeded, so that reason is gone, and the cost is just too high to justify continued flights simply because it is cool or for scientific interest.

What's left to explore? We know what we wanted to know about the moon. As for the "space station", where have you been? They've been building it for years.

It should be completed by 2010.

it is already being used by aliens to observe the planet earth. due to the ratio of the moon,s axial spin relative to the time taken to orbit the earth we never see the dark side , which is convenient for those who shelter on that side whils,t observing the antics of the human race. this fact is already known by those in power and the reason why they have not been there.
