The best way is to cut back any overhanging branches etc. If the birds can't land above the object, there will be less poo. Other than that, if you want to, you can hang something shiny, reflective and moving nearby. For example, collect a few of those free cdroms from AOL or Walmart connect. Birds don't like the movement/reflection.

My grandma uses toy snakes that you can get at like Wal-Mart or something. She sticks them on the railings of her porch and she hasn't had any problems since. She just moves them every so often. The birds stay off the railings and no more bird droppings! Plus it's safe for the birds and not that expensive either.

LEAD! Seriously though I'm not sure,but they make a device that goes off every so often to frighten the birds away......kind of loud though.I would think anything that scares them repeatedly would work though.
