I have my mom's vanity dresser, it's pretty old. Is there a way to fix the nicks and crap that it's got from over the years? A stain? a wood filler?... what IS a wood filler? It's minor stuff, basically from crap being banged against it and what not... i want it to look better. hhhhhhhelp.

The first thing you want to do is learn more about the piece. If it is of any antiquity, the best thing to do is nothing.

Depending on the surface, sand it. Just lightly because you can always do more, not less. Wood filler is usually a glue like substance, which you can mix with wood dust (from sanding) and fill in deeper gaps. Then you have to stain all of it or paint it to have it all match.

There are so many questions: dents, nicks, scratches, gouges, barely scratched, deep, etc. etc.

If it was me... I would have someone look at it, such as a furniture repair shop or even a High School wood shop teacher. They could actually see the damage and give you the best answers to your questions.

They make a putty stick like a crayon, if you dont want to strip it, try laquer retarded , use a rag , put some LR on the rag and rub the surface.
