you have to root it first. in a container large enough to hold the ends of the bamboo add water enough to cover then ends. Let them soak regularly changing the water. In a few weeks there should be nubs forming on the end of the plant. theses are the begining of the roots. you then can plant the bamboo in a mossy soil and place gravel on top of the soil to keep the bamboo growing straight up.

You need to think twice about planting bamboo. Unless you have a serious method to control the roots, you will have bamboo everywhere.

By serious, I mean a solid steel barrier several feet in the ground!!

Bamboo is EXTREMELY invasive. Ever planted mint? It doesn't stay where you put it, it goes all over. Bamboo is even worse, it's tough to get rid of it...ever. Like kudzu.

if you want to use it as a fence then you will have tu put a deep border(cement,steel,a tipe of strong plastic special 4 borders) to control the bamboo cause like everybody says...it is very massive.. ore in pots.. it deppends where and why you want it..

You can wrap an end in a wet paper towel, keep it damp and it will root. I'm not sure about the ground thing though.
