How do I keep bugs out of my birdseed?

At night, hundreds of beetle like bugs come onto my deck to feed on the scattered birdseed - is there anything that can be done to rid my backyard of the bugs that is still safe for the birds?

Put the birdseed in a container and dangle it from the house or a tree. The beetles may be Japanese beetles that will be gone soon anyway.
