if your intent is just to have the child focused on school work and the school setting- yes i think so
if your intent is to have them unexposed to the opposite sex hoping to keep them "innocent"- THEN NO, remember, the things we are curious about become a fixation sometimes (think of the reputation of catholic school girls that were in a segrogated schooling environment).

There are a lot of Catholic schools where there are only boys or only girls where I live. I go to a school where there are both sexes.
Buys and girls do learn somewhat differently. Girls are better at learning from a lecture, while boys are best at learning from experiments. But, since I went to a Montessori school, I believe that seeing it done, and doing it for your self is the best way. This is what we do at my school, for the hands on things. And even for English, because, we have really excellent teachers. There are labs where ppl do experiments. Bunsen burners, magnesium, dry ice, test tubes, and the like. Everyone seems to get the message much clearer when they can see it right in front of their eyes. A lot of educators now think that this is the best way for both genders to learn.
Boys and girls also learn from each other. If we are looking a poetry written by a girl, a girl might be able to understand it, or to put a feeling into words in a way that a boy can't because of the different ways that we think. Same girls for a boy. So the girls can learn something from the boys explanation of the poem that the boys can't and vice versa.
Also, it's good to have friends of both genders. Since most girls and boys keep pretty separate in elementary, if they never really interact with the other gender, they won't know how to make friends and communicate in the real world, where they'll have to. Some girls are pulled more into sports by their guy friends, and sports are all very healthful things. Some boys get pulled more into studies by their girl friends, and a lot need to.
My school, having both girls and boys was the first school in Ohio on the top 100 list by Newsweek this year. In the number 57 spot or somewhere very near. It's been on the list for many years, and is considered one of the best schools in the nation. Despite that, we are still required to take ancient Latin (so silly) for three years.

There is some statistical evidence that suggests girls do much better in unisex classes, in math and science in particular. There is also some evidence that boys do better in English classes that are unisex.
Anecdotally, most educators will tell you that having co-ed classes often leads to much distraction; we all tend to dread the spring!
However, that said, boys from all boys schools tend to take much longer to socialize, especially about things like personal hygiene. I can't say about girls, never having taught in an all girls environment (and not being female).

I say no. I have both a son and daughter. when they were growing up, they both seemed to have friends of the opposite sex ALOT and that's all it was . Just friends. I was happy about this because when they marry, I'm hoping that their spouse will also be their best friend.
at school, at home at play ,let them interact with all genders. this will let them know that the opposite sex are also PEOPLE too.

No, I think that theory is unnecessary. At school kids learn to interact with the opposite sex. Leave things the way they are.
