When you knit plain you put the right hand needle through the loop, going away from you, on the far side of your left hand needle. When you purl you put the needle through the front of the loop, on the side of the left hand needle that is closest to you.
It's sort of opposite but really hard to explain.
I hope someone can do better than this!
