I'm 28 yrs. old, female, and I live in Canada. I just got my driver's license, I am very excited. I would really like to understand the basics of cars, what needs to be looked after in a car, what needs to be done on cars yearly to keep them at top shape, that kind of thing. I would appreciate any suggestions. I have tried to find books but can't seem to find a basic knowledge book.

This wonderful book called "Auto Repair for Dummies" is VERY helpful, or make friends at your local non-scummy repair shop!

Have you purchased a car yet? When you do, try to make sure that there is an owners manual with it. Many of these have checklists in the back of them for yearly and quartarly maintenance that should be performed on the car. I always take my car to my mechanic every spring and fall and have him check my coolant level, make sure my air conditioner is charged, look at the tires and brakes, and check all the belts and hoses under the hood for wear. Try keeping a log with reciepts and dates of any repair work or replacement parts you have purchased so that if you have a problem with them, you can have them replaced more easily and quickly. It also helps you keep track of when you will need to do certain types of things, like when to get the next oil change or have your tires rotated. Another good tip, is to check around with your friends or coworkers to find a trusty garage or mechanic, and ask him for advice on anything you are unsure of. Good luck, and enjoy driving!

If you get one with the original owners manual it will tell you everything you need to do. All new cars have one. If you get a used car, roll the dice, I suppose. Find a good mechanic that has a good rep in your area. Ask friends and neighbors. They will usually help you with that info. I don't think there is a "Cars for Dummies" book yet.
