Because it is kind of romantic to cause destruction and watch it unfold? I'm not sure.
But just remember this - before you insult virus authors, remember that they are doing you a huge favor. They have forced companies and the government to ramp up the security of computing, and engineer security into their infrastructure (which they would not have done otherwise). Now consider if no viruses had ever been written. We would be completely vulnerable to a terrorist attack in this fashion.
Don't complain about the people who are making it possible for you to sit in front of your computer like you are doing right now, and feel safe from anything other than a minor annoyance.

The question you ask is a good one. Why do people, with obvious talent use it in destructive ways? I don't know, and it is sad really and very annoying. The thing that is even sadder is they usually get a slap on the hand, maybe 1 year in jail, and then they are out. When out these huge corporations hire them for astronomical amounts so they can keep the other hackers out... or test new software so it can't be hacked.
I feel if someone does this sort of thing they should not be rewarded, so to speak for being a hack.

You make the mistake of thinking that you need to be intelligent to write a virus. Except for some truly original ones, you don't! Any decent programmer can write a virus in an hour or so; additionally stock viral code is available at hacker sites.
As to WHY- because they are physical weaklings with inferiority complexes and the only way that they can feel powerful is by "hurting" someone.

Some do it for the challenge and for the kick out of it, some do it because they have a need to show how smart they are, i.e., low self esteem, some do it because they're downright nasty (the same type that would torture little animals) and some do it for profit.

Greed, arrogance, insecurity with themselves. I bet that there are some instances where they are the equivalent of mercenaries, they get paid from someone or some rogue gov't to create a malicious payload to effect the end user.
