Ok, this sounds like a joke but its true, somebody asked a very successful opera singer how to get to Carnegie Hall, and he/she answered, "Practice!"
Sing along with tapes or CD's you like, build your breathing capacity and learn to integrate breathing and singing. Walk, run, or do Yogic breathing exercises to build your lung capacity. Have friends listen to you and ask them for suggestions, observations, criticisms. And believe it or not, try Karaoke sessions whenever you get the chance, it will give you experience performing to a live crowd. Study for parts and audition for them. Have confidence in yourself! Best of luck!

Lessons lessons lessons. That is my best advice. If not, read and study, or go to opera's to observe. Learn by watching then doing.
