"that piece has an intensity without any sort of false glamour"

it's about a piece of music.

What does "false glamour" mean here? does it mean pretentious?

Thanx.

I think it means a good solid piece of music that didn't have to be embellished with extra effects or extra notes, etc. thrown in to make it carry it's weight. A quality piece that contains only what is essential to the piece. No frills or fluff added.

It means the true value is very intense without any hoopla or exaggeration. For example, a beautiful woman who wears no make-up and her hair is natural - she is fully clothed. She is so beautiful you can't even take your eyes off of her - it hits you in your soul. That is intense. She is not showing off any body parts nor has she fixed herself up - there is no false glamour. She is what she is...intensity without false glamour...basically.

Pretentious can be considered close to “false glamour.”
1.Claiming or demanding a position of distinction or merit, especially when unjustified.
2.Making or marked by an extravagant outward show; ostentatious.
Other words that have similar meaning are:

Overstated, abstract, amplified, artificial, bouncing, caricatural, distorted, embellished, embroidered, exalted, excessive, extravagant, fabricated, fabulous, false, fantastic, farfetched, hammy, highly colored, hyperbolic, impossible, inflated, magnified, melodramatic, overblown, overdone, overestimated, overkill, overstated, overwrought, preposterous, schmaltzy, sensational, spectacular, steep, strained, stylized, tall, too much*, too-too*, unrealistic

Henry - yes it's very close to meaning pretentious. It means it's a great piece of music, it's beautiful - but no one is trying to be better than they are. Does that help at all?
It's Incredible without trying to be!

Yeah, you've got the idea.

Just remember, just because it's written in English doesn't mean it's worth reading.
