Any exercise machine can have bad effect on your body if you don't use it right. Even without a machine, you can injure yourself and many people do. Just be careful. And yeah, I heard about the knee impact thing too.

it depends upon how you use it. If you gradually make your workouts harder starting from a beginner's level and vary your workouts you will be okay and gain a benefit.
if you continually do the same workout, or add to much incline or try to go too fast, you will get no effect or worse, an injury.
get some advice from a certified trainer on its proper use for your level of fitness.
