Well...I wouldn't exactly say that. I agree to a point, if you are talking about celebrities and how thin they are..and models. Young girls especially get an unhealthy image of themselves in their minds because they think that they need to be as thin as certain celebs...And if they aren't they think they are fat, or not as pretty, or don't have enough money. As they grow up, they will begin to realize that they make their own happiness, and some celebs are nothappy at all. The media must show readers/viewers what they want to see, which is usually (unfortunately) a lifestyle much different from their own. The "normal" person in america belongs to a lower-middle class family. Who would want to see someone similar to their own family being portrayed by the media? That's boring, right? The media only give people what they want to see.

You can't lay the blame on the world and the media only. This phenomenon you are talking about (your discussion is in the realm of beauty, but this topic can be applied to any socialogical topic, really!) is due to how societies of people tend to interact. Some people are stronger, some weaker. Since the beginnings of civilization, we have evidence of leadership. this is simply humans' apparent instinct to follow kicking in! We, as a society can change the image that we consider beautiful. We do it all the time (i.e. fashion changes)! Large scale change like what I think you are talking about (you were not specific to obesity/thinness, but you seem to imply that idea in your question) takes many years. It took us many years to put those ideals in place. It will take us many years to change them.

The media is not interested in our health, happiness or sanity. It cares about us spending money and being insecure with ourselves which is great for leading us by the nose. We begin to rely on the media to define what is good and bad about ourselves. The media also plays off of itself. French fries and chocolate one moment and diet pills the next. The most money is spent when there are counteracting forces pulling us in both directions at once. Just my thoughts!! Thanks for your question.
