my laptop screen becomes blank during the process of booting it doesnt give me a chance to press "F8" to boot in safe mode. and press the "delete" key to enter configuration. would this be related to the near expiration of my norton security software or a hardware problem?

It could mean several things. Is your laptop about 3 or 4 years old? Normally it means you need to either:

1) Update your BIOS
2) Your hard drive is failing
3) Your CMOS battery is dying
4) A circuit or connection is failing (usually happens after a thunderstorm and during a power outage)
or
5) Your laptop battery needs to get replaced.

Its also possible your graphics card needs to be replaced.

Could be a virus. As soon as you turn the computer on, start pressing F8 repeatedly. This sometimes will bypass the blank screen problem and still let you get in to safe mode.

If still unable to boot up, you might have to reinstall your operating system. Hopefully your laptop is new enough that it will boot from CD, especially if you can't access your BIOS.

A final consideration is a problem with an electrical component like the mortherboard. I had a bad soldered connection that finally gave out due to the heat generated by my laptop.

Good luck. Hope some of these ideas help.

From the description that you provide the problem appears to be software related but not necessarily a virus. Does the screen show anything at all before /during or after boting. Does the boot process complete? Try booting from a bootable CD to eliminate/confirm the HDD as the source of the problem.

it could be a lot of things but i'd check the video card first, i had an RM laptop (korean parts but distributed in UK) about 5 years ago and it does the same thing from time to time when you're lucky it will not act up the tricky part is getting it to boot but once it boots you'll not any problem and i used to shake it in order to boot it and the problem was the video card. when you power it on you'll hear it boot but about a few seconds after just a blank screen and the power is off s if you didn't turned it on

hook an external monitor to the system and see if you get a display then.
if not it could be the video card or mother board is bad
it does not mean you have a virus.
