There is a 20 foot high tree that has grown up in my backyard that is full of, what look like, green raspberries. A few of them are beginning to turn red.

It sounds like you have a Mulberry tree. Mulberries are very good but don't eat anything off the tree until you identify what it is. Take a leaf to a nursery or something.

Raspberries are low growing bushes only.

if i remember right raspberries grow on plants

You've most likely got yourself a mulberry tree.

They grow on vines, and vines can grow up the trunk of the tree.
