You may put up a temporary fence around that area. Stakes are okay put they may work themselves back out in time causing problems with our lawn mower. Walk your dog in a different place until they root in a few weeks.

You could try tent stakes or even break some plastic clothes hangars in two, so you have kind of two candy cane shaped pieces. Shove them into the ground like tent stakes. Can I also say, do NOT miss watering the sod a single day. Water early in the am, the earlier the better. Then if you can, water after the sun has gone down or is close to down.

We always used wood stakes.Nothing big though, that way you don't have to remove them and they just rot away after a while and won't tear up your mower.

Try landscape staples. They look like large U nails.
