when i was in 6th grade we had to do an entire family heritage history project. it had to be extremely elaborate and do a report that was (if i remember correctly 6 pages minimum) and a 5-7 minute presentation.

it is good because you have to dig way back into your family heritage and your students will find out info about their families, and your students learn to investigate.

we were given i believe a month or 2 to finish the project.

1) Which color cars have the highest indoor temperature during the summer? (remember to have a large sample size....car dealerships may help you with this if you explain that you are "a 6th grade student from ___ middle school doing a science project...")

2) Average wait time for a person to pull out of a parking spot at the mall if they have another car waiting for them or have no waiting person.

3) Difference in the amount of water used during a shower and during a bath? Which uses more water?

4) Which type of soil grows rye grass fastest?

5) Which color light do bean plants grow best with?

6) Resting heart rate of people normally vs listening to hard rock vs listening to classical music.

7) What type of material makes the best electromagnet? http://www.energyquest.ca.gov/projects/electromagnet.html this one is incredibly easy but sounds difficult. Material refers to what metal you use for the nail (i.e. iron, galvinized steel, etc)

Libraries typically have books devoted to "easy" science projects. Most are pretty interesting ideas.

I'm not entirely sure what is it that you mean by 'investigatory project' but I discern it as a investigative project that involves multiple channels of research - interviews, news reports, encyclopedia, dictionary, history, etc.

Might I suggest the following :

1) Similarities in serial murderers and rapists

2) Statistics concerning migratory birds in your locality

3) Number of anthills within a one kilometre radius of your locality

4) Eating preferences of people in your locality - fork and knife
fast food - veg. or non veg. - how many times they eat in or eat out every week - prefered type of food (Italian, Chinese, typical American etc). etc. etc. etc.

I'm most probably not from the same country as you come from thus, I'm unfamiliar with the education system in your place. I have attempted to assist you very objectively - just responding to what you asked for. I don't know if my suggestions have veered off too much. I'm sorry if they have and I'm unable to help you. Good luck in your project though :)
