Only so much energy can be stored by compressed air. The holding tank would be very heavy if the pressure was high. Gas at high enough pressure would liquefy causing problems. But the major problem is that you would spend more energy compressing the gas than you would get out of it. There are always loses. If we had a very cheap source of power there are all sorts of things we could do. It is finding that source and an efficient means to store and transport the energy that is the problem.

It is a matter of energy conversion.
Compressed air comes from a compressor.
Compressor is driven by external force (something that cause the compressor to work)
All the compressor I know is driven by an electric motor or an internal combustion engine.
these devices are converting energy which ultimately is gasoline or coal. These devices are not 100% efficient so I don't think using compressed air would help anything.

compressed air doesnt have the same "explosive" compression availiable as the fossil fuels do.
