Who could forget about Dre? I'm pretty sure it's a nickname, there's a Dangerdoom track where the MC claims to have phds in four different subject and the other guy says "oh right, I thought it was a nickname, you know like Dr Dre".
And wikipedia says he was a fan of a basketball player called Dr J. growing up
