marks. You might think that this is a stupid question, but just bare with me, k? I thought that quotation marks were to be used around exact words that someone has said. That shows that this is a quote, right? Well, I have noticed that quite a few people ( including myself) are using quotation marks to put emphasis on something, to be sarcastic, or to make a mockery of something. Is this a correct use of quotation marks? Or are quotation marks being misused?

Language is ever evolving. Quotation marks are used for direct speech or to quote a speaker (quote within a quote). etc. However, I use quotation marks for connotation or deeper meaning as compared to denotation or dictionary/grammar text use. I do not use it for sarcasm or mockery but to indicate a 'so called 'meaning. For example, there is no' stupid' question in my opinion because a person who asks a question had to think- use the brain function. This also suggests that the person wants to know or learn more information or discover an answer via a survey. Such a person is not 'stupid' but 'intelligent' (without regard for IQ,GPA or academic prowess such as degrees, diplomas, honorsetc.)
