When one talks about diet it is mainly about carhohydrates, proteins and fats.
But in fact vitamins and minerals are also required in traces.
They are actually essential for various basic physiological processes such as digestion, respiration, assimilation, active transport, and many more subcellular functions.
Hence, experimental animal actually grown on an artificial diet without a particular mineral, will eventually succum to death.
Because of this importance of the vitamins and minerals, they constitute a part of balanced diet.
Why we must consider them as a part of diet, and not as supplimetary tablets?
Research has shown that vitamins from natural sources are absorbed better than the tableted pure form.
What next after vitamins and minerals?
A new group of biomolecules is coimng up under nutraceuticals.
This includes various biomolecules that act as preventive agents for various diseases such as cancer, alzimer's, arthritis, blood pressure and so on.
There are biomolecules that can control obesity, and accumulation of cholesterol.
Some other biomolecules that are actually insoluble in water, which can be termed as insoluble vitamins. They replace soluble vitamins in their physiological functions, and are required in much lower quantities than traditional vitamins. Active research is going on on some such biomolecules.
Why we are getting into all this new battery of biomolecules performing various functions?
Because we are turning more and more to imbalanced artificial diet.

Because some people don't eat a well balanced diet so taking vitamins make up for what they can't or don't eat. I know vitamin A is good for the eyes, B for the hair and skin, C for overall wellness, D for bones and teeth, Vitamin E is good for skin and nails.

Vitamins and minerals are not only useful but are an absolute necessity to sustain a healthy life. They are only indirectly involved in a balanced diet. I believe you're confusing them with the basic food groups. For instance, a deficiency in vitamin B12 or iron causes anemia. Many other life threatening diseases are caused by vitamin or mineral deficiencies
