You need to format and make the format work before you can install Windows 98. You need to put the hard drive back into the old computer and format it from there. Then move it back to the new computer and then reinstall Windows 98. Once you install Windows 98 then you can upgrade.
Since you already partitioned your hard drive, you should not have Windows on it anymore so I'm curious as to why it thinks you still have a Windows on it. Go to the MS Command Prompt and try manually formatting it by typing format c:
Then try reinstalling Windows 98. I dont think you can setup with Windows XP since its an upgrade CD. Also make sure your Windows 98 CD is an install CD and not an upgrade too.

Run FDISK to eliminate all partitions. Create a primary partition, then set it active.
Then boot to the XP Pro CD. Let it format the drive. If it is an update version, it will ask you for proof you own an earlier version of Windows. At that point insert your 98 CD. Don't install 98 first.

first of all it is a bad idea to load up win 98 and then upgrade to win XP. go for win XP straightaway. ok then first of all you would need a win XP installation CD. then startup the computer and go into bios setup and set the first boot up option to CD. then restart the computer and boot up from the installation CD. at a point it would show you the partitions available on the hard disk. delete the C drive and create it again. format that partition and then run setup on the same partition. on a fast processor it would take around 15 minutes. on Pentium III it takes 2 hrs approx.

You made need to Update your Bios for the Windows Version you trying to install. To Install Windows 2000 on an IBM Laptop of mine, I had to go to the Support for my Computer and Download the new Bios to a Floppy or Burn to CD if you not have a Floppy. Then you have to "Flash" the Bios with the new Bios for your new OS. I not sure Flashing the Bios is the same procedure with all Brands, I think it would. You could ask here the question; "How do I flash my Bios? (Details) Give name/model of your computer and ask where do you get the new Bios!!!!
You will get your answers. I not sure this what your problem is, but, It sounds like you have Windows 3.xx or Windows 95 from what you saying.

you could basically insert your installation cd and take it from there. Reinstalling the OS will wipe your hdd sparkling. confident you will lose each and all of the archives and courses. i could propose saving any archives (archives, %.) you desire to maintain. in case you have paid subscriptions (or MS workplace), i could propose getting the serial numbers in a handy place. Use jelly bean keyfinder in case you're able to be able to desire to get them yet don't have the cd covers to any extent further (google for it).
