Do it alone in your room. If having music on distracts you turn that off. Take breaks every thirty minutes or an hour. What I do is set an goal such as (when writing a paper) write 3 pages, and then I take a break. I move onto a different subject. In a book I might say, read 100 pages today (I was reading an 800 page book and had to finish it really fast) and then I stop. Mix it up. When you can't concentrate on reading anymore, read out loud for a bit. I'm reading War and Peace right now and it's a huge book so when I get distracted, that's what I do.
As for studying for a test or exam, I am easily distracted too. So I'll re-read half the chapters, and then re-read half my notes, and then the rest of the chapters and the rest of my notes. I like to study for tests with a friend (a serious friend) because then we a re both very concentrated on what we are doing and won't let the other won't become distracted.

The advice already given about clearing distractions out of the room is crucial to concentration. You also have to train yourself how to study more effectively, however.

Step 1: Pick a room or place in your bedroom (that is not your bed!) that is free of distractions. Only use this spot for studying or things that take a lot of mental effort, ie craft building. A desk is the best place to study. If you study in your bed, your mind receives two conflicting inputs, one is to study (the task at hand) and the other is a condition to which you are habituated to doing in that place (sleeping!). Habituate your mind to a study spot.

Step 2: Have all of the materials you need to study nearby so that you don't have the urge to get up and find something. This includes going to the bathroom before you sit down and having a glass of water nearby just in case you get thirsty.

Step 3: Turn off the television. Sometimes "white noise" is helpful as background noise. Turn a radio on very softly and preferably in another room. Pick a radio station or cd that has wordless music so that you don't start paying attention to those words. Of course, some people can't study with any noise at all. Find your best way through trial and error.

Step 4: Studying is a three step process for the most part. First, skim the chapter for main ideas. This helps get you in the mood to read it and also focuses your mind on what it's about to learn. Most high school text books have questions at the beginning and key terms at the end. Read over them before you start the second phase of studying so that you know what you're getting yourself into.

Second, read the chapter and make notes or an outline, listing important facts and keywords. Have a dictionary nearby just in case you don't know what a word means. Try to avoid using a dictionary online as you may be tempted to surf the web. You can typically find student dictionaries for fairly cheap at local bookstores.

Third, review your notes and ask yourself questions about the material. Try to write down three questions about what you just read and answer them fully in a few sentences. This may seem annoying, but you really will learn the material and it will keep you interested. You can also sometimes predict what questions your teacher may ask the next day or on the exam.

Step 5: Before a big test, give yourself one night per chapter to review notes. Spend the last night before the test doing last minute reviews.

This may seem like a lot, but the more work you put in at the beginning, the less you'll have to later. You're gradually training your mind to study more effectively which improves concentration.

Also, try not to study for more than 50 minutes without a 5 minute break. Your mind is like a Brita filter - it can only accept so much water at a time. You have to give it some time to let some of the water filter down before you can put more in. When you come back after 50 minutes, review your notes quickly. Do you remember this stuff? If no, read over the outline, then put it aside for a little while. Switch to another subject and work on that homework for no more than 50 minutes. Repeat the process.

Best of Luck!

Hello, I am a junior in a university and you should be commended for wanting to know how to study and not about your social life. I have spent a lot of time researching various methods of studying. I will try and keep this brief, and give you the information that I have found most useful and the one I use in college.

It is called the SQ3R method, developed in 1940’s by Francis P. Robinson who was a research psychologist.

Briefly, it stands for: survey, question, read, recite, and review.

Survey:
Let’s say that you have been assigned a chapter to study in a textbook. First you would survey the chapter. Flip slowly through the pages looking at headings, subheadings, terms in boldface, definitions in italics, captions under photographs, tables, charts, and figures. Read quickly the summary at the end of the chapter, without any effort to retain its contents. The survey should not take you longer than 10-15 minutes.

Question:
From the beginning of the chapter, proceed by paragraphs. Skim each paragraph for tis potential to generate a question. The headings, subheadings, terms in boldface, and definitions in italics are likely sources for questions. Also, captions under photographs, tables, charts, and figures can be the source of questions.
Look only for key concepts and important points. These are what will inspire the actual test questions that will be eventually asked by your instructors in High School and professors in college. If you cover the the key concepts and important points you will have touched on 90 % or more of what can be asked on the test.

Read:
Go back to question 1 and read for its answer. When you are satisfied that you know the answer summarize it in writing in one or two sentences. If a definition is involved, it is alright to copy it verbatim. But make sure you understand what the definition is.

Recite:
When you have a complete list of questions and answers for the chapter, it is time to recite the answers. Go back to question 1 and recite the answer as best you can.

Review:
When you can answer all of the questions your main work for a chapter is complete. During the evening or morning before the examination all that you have to do is invest a brief session in review. Double check to make sure that you can respond to every question. If there is a difficult one, spend more time to those.

I hope that this is something that you will find useful in your education. Getting into college is difficult at best, good luck.

U can't concentrate on anything if u hav distractions... try to figure out wht distracts u and stay away from whatever it is. T.Vz, computers, phone calls etc. Most ppl can only concentrate when they are comfortable. study where n how u feel most comfortable. I usually lock myself up in my room. Practice everyday and make up a daily to-study list and try to follow it daily without fail. Group study is a great option if u need help with ur studies. Ask a few freinds to help u out and organize the time and venue. Be strict with ur studies but don't completely withdraw urself from social activities
Tenth grade is no joke, like u said u have to work hard. Many ppl go through the same stuff , don't worry too much ;)... All the best.

1. First of all understand the importance of studying very clearly.
2. Then start with the most interesting subject.
3. Complete one or two units
4. Then take up the most uninteresting one and complete 1 unit
5. Be aggressive. Just don't leave anything unclear, not done.
6. If the subject is difficult - a) ask an expert to explain b) understand from different perspectives c) try to learn it in interesting ways d) break it into parts and study
7. Enjoy every moment of learning without much focusing on results

Isolate yourself from any thing that distracts you. It is the simplest and the most effective way. I suggest you to rotate your subjects. Which means, you can do maths for a hour and then do sciences. Try to do the subjects that you are more confident in first, but at the same time, dun neglect other subjects. Good luck for your finals.

i am a junior in college and i have the exact same problem. i used to just tell myself that after i got through a certain part... i would take a break then come back and repeat.... so that way i would always read to get to that part so i could take a break and do something else. but if you have a really hard time doing anything like that.... you might want to consider getting a percription for adderall. its a drug kind of like ridlin... and it will help you concentrate.

I think that it helps if you try to find a study method that helps. Try sitting in a room where there are no distractions. Also, it helps if you study a little each day, so you'll be able to remember things easier. I hope that helps!

Break it up. Give yourself only a few pages to read - take notes. When you are done, reward yourself by doing something different for a few minutes, then re read your notes. Then concentrate on the next pages, or subject.

I think studying with a least one other person in a quiet place like library can make you concentrated. Do not go somewhere where you feel comfortable, like on the bed, it will make you sleepy.
