This is happening on a weekly basis (hacker attacks), there are numerous files on my laptop that are not mine & its the hassle of trying to restore my email a/c's. My laptop is only 2 months old & I have firewalls etc. installed but they always manage to break in to my computer. Can anyone advise me what to do to stop it? Thanks

A lot of the above answers are very good. Having a good password is esential and not posting it ANYWHERE is a good idea.
Do you have your laptop (Windows XP) set to turn on and log in without a password?
Also do you have your e-mail account set to automaticly log you on with the click of a mouse?
If you said yes to the above 2 questions than ANYONE who gets use of your laptop can get into your e-mail just by turning it on. CHANGE THOSE PASSWORDS and the way you log on if this is the case.
Also to help you, you should be using ALL of the following.

The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)
The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (www.spybot.info)
AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (www.spywareblaster.com)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.

These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.

The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have counteless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be tought in schools)

I recommend using a firewall by mcafee, it is class C rated and available for use by the military. Also try increasing your firewall settings. You might already have trojans installed, and therefore the firwall is not preventing anything. Download SpyBot S&D, look it up on google, they are a free and one of the best spyware removal. It might aid your anti-virus in finding the trojan. Last resort, a low level format and start over.

Get a better firewall if that one isnt working. Also if you are working of a network than increase the security of it by giving WEP keys to authorised machines.

With regards to passwords and WEP keys, its best to not use obvious passwords (or anything personal to you). Use at least 8 characters and use a combination of numbers, letters and symbols.

invest in the top of the line system protection software.
regularly change all of your passwords.
your passwords should be made up of a combination of letters and numbers to make it harder for hackers to crack.
limit the number of users to your laptop or pc
