If you're jamming it means that you're playing music without any strict protocol, you're not reading music sheets.. You're not playing a song, but everyone gets into the music and just starts working with each other to create a fun expression of your music.
So you start playing and you rock on and then you're jamming!

Jamming means free style solo perfomance of each member in a band!

Suppose in band we all play chord Am-C-D-F7/Em7

First guitarist start solo for 16 meas, then keyboardist start for 16 meas, then bass etc.

Jams improve the real time note taking and understanding the chord!

To me it's when you and your band or getting together with other musiciains start playing what you feel. For example lets say I get on my Bass and create and play a cool riff! the others jump in and there you have a Jam session!
