Go to Start Menu, click RUN.
Type msconfig and hit enter.
You should see a pop up box.
Go to Startup tab and uncheck all the programs that you do not want on your start up.
This will prevent those programs from starting up when you restart windows.
This will usually make your computer go a little faster if you have do not have much memory on your computer.
You do not want a bunch of things running in your background during startup if it is not necessary.
Also, do a disk compression and disk defrag. It will compress all your files and give you more hard drive space and the defrag will organize your entire system for faster retrieval.
Yes you should definitely buy more Memory. If you get more memory, you will never have this problem again.

Ok, it might be that
your computer is quite old
you don't have enough ram
your processor isn't sufficient enough to handle XP properly
you have too much stuff on startup hogging resources such as ram
You need to elaborate more to give me a better idea to your problem. You can defrag and do a standard cleaning. RAM is always a good thing but you need to know what type your computer can handle and the max amount it can take.
Wish i could be more help but this is the basic stuff that needs to be checked when your system is running slow.

Who knows what you should do - you didn't provide any details - like operating system (version of Windows), how old the computer is, how much RAM it currently has, how fast the CPU is?
In short - clean out any spyware that may be on it using tools like Spybot, Adaware, and Windows Defender, then if you have less than 512 MB of RAM, get more RAM. More info than that requires you to explain with at least a LITTLE detail.

Is your harddrive full?? It may be beneficial to free up some more space.
What spec is your machine?? And what do you use it for. Disk fragmenter and cleanup may help, as may additional ram.
The source of the problem may be the programs running in the background and on startup. Consider changing these settings or uninstalling programs you dont use.

RAM helps a lot!
BUT you have to format it periodically. And you also need :
1. Antivirus software
2. Firewall
3. Adware, spyware remover.
I have Zone Alarm Suite and it's all that. It's not free but it deserves every $.

if its a failrly new puter like 2000 or xp - then first
search for the program StartupRun , download it, install it
go thru and stop all the unnecessary program from starting up when you boot, ya right click and disable them
after all the crap is shut off, see how its running then

the reason behind this is far too many programs running in realtime n consuming more amt of ram. Thus,ur pc will use virtual memory which is on hard disk.
Increasing the RAM is one of the solution n other is to remove programs that is not neccessary.
