We here in Western Ma. are often given reports from the weather stations that severe weather is on the way and to take cover quick. Just the other day we were scared out of our pants that a dangerous storm was bearing down on us which contained dangerous lighting, winds in excess of 70 miles an hour, and golf ball size hail with very heavy rain. All of Western and Central Ma. was given this warning. The storm never came, the sun shown bright. The radar showed nothing. Some of us have had close calls with lighting and high winds and a prediction like this is not well taken when nothing occurs. With all the new equipment the weather stations have, what is the problem they predict scarey storms that do not materialize ? If it is not Homeland Security scareing us to death with a threat of some kind, then the weather stations add to the scenerio with threats of their own. But folks , stay calm,we could if we were not threatened constantly.

Forecasts are based on probable atmospheric and ground level conditions. This is not an exact science, but has certainly come a long way with accuracy. When it comes to severe weather, I'd rather have a 'heads up' and not have it happen, then to have it happen and not know it was possible.

Personally I would rather get the warning and have a heads up on what may come.
When the weather stations are looking at where the clouds are and the way the winds are blowing the weather and the weather stays that way or gets worse then they will be right, but if by chance winds change course and either blow the storm past you or change directions then you won't have the storm.
Keep in mind no one is perfect.
If I could pick I would rather get the warning then get caught out in weather with my children and not having a safe place to be...
There is a saying all over the world " If you don't like the weather, wait five minutes it will change "
We all know computers make mistakes, but keep in mind that we are only human and we too make mistakes, but we keep on trucking.
There are also times that weather people don't catch storms and I know first hand, My mother and I drove threw a small tornado that picked up a barn and threw it into another persons field and it was scary to say the least, but we made it threw it. We were just lucky that it wasn't stronger than that.

Weather forecasting is better today than it has ever been, however the calculations for fluid dynamics are more complicated than most people can grasp. The number of surface variables is so incredible that the making short term weather forecasts fall into an area of mathematics call chaos. Very small changes in initial conditions make a large difference in future conditions. Certain weather phenomenon are more effected by chaos than others. The exact dynamics of a thunderstorm are very effected by chaos. The probability of Thunderstorms developing in a region is not very effected by chaos. Very often forecasters are quite accurate when they say there is a "some number" percent chance of thunderstorms. The problem is that people have too high of expectations. If the forecast says a 30% chance of rain people think "oh no it is going to rain" instead of realizing that there is a 70% chance they will not see rain.

Good Question! I think it is because if they find any activity at all,, they get so hyped up and excited.
When a weather girl was broadcasting the Katrina storm,,she was actually smiling and said ,
"Unfortunaetly,,it has stopped raining at this time???
One time when we were on vacation in Mississippi, we were watching the news to see if we were going to have to evacuate,,and noticed out hotel in the background of the news crew. We opened our door because he was holding his hat, almost about to fall down,,due to the wind??????? It wasn't even that bad!!! People were out swimming and walking,, and he made mention that it was very dangerous for these people to be outside and they were going to ask them to head for cover???????
so, strange,,, an hr later the sun was shining bright!!!!
So,, they are like volunteer fire dept people..they get a high from this! My family stayed w/ Alberto when they were suppose to leave,,and thankgoodness they didn't because nothing hardly happened,,

i like all the answers i see on here and agree with the first guy .... forecasting is a trumped up business with a bunch of high dollar fancy equipment! what a waste.. my feeling is that they think we all live in a bunch of caves and never get outside or are incapable of looking out a window. to me , weather is common sense if it looks like **** outside...be careful and take necessary precautions. you cant live and die by the weatherman. i think they could tone it down a notch with their henny penny type predictions and i also think they should be payed on a merit system based on accurate predictions! maybe then they would think before they speak or try to grab ratings!
