What if the reading was connected to a hobby he liked? There's nothing wrong with reading hot rod magazines is there? So what he really needs, in my opinion, is to get interested in a hobby that might lead eventually to his profession in life. I started with amateur radio and became an electrical engineer. I took vocational type courses in high school rather than college prep type courses. They'll keep him interested in high school when he gets there.

Could it be that he has trouble reading and finds it frustrating? He could be saying that he doesn't care about reading as a defense mechanism so as not to feel dumb. Maybe you could get him tested for dyslexia. If that is diagnozed, a learning strategy can be made and other methods of teaching taught. Good luck.

Maybe he does not like fiction. My son reads well but only reads for information, Car Magazines, tech manuals, computer and game magazines. Try different types of reading material, see if you can find one he likes.

I agree with previous comments, have him checked for reading disabilities first.
