How do I insert a random quote into my website without putting all the quotes on the webpage? Does it have to be in php or is there a way of doing it in css? I'm so confused...

Either PHP or Javascript could do it (amongst others). Javascript doesn't require your server to give you any special support unlike PHP. PHP has the advantage that users cannot find all the quotes if they view the source code of your page (if this matters). Try to find a ready-made script somewhere like:

although with a little time spent learning javascript you should easily be able to write your own. Please respect any restrictions on retaining credits etc for other people's scripts.

You can use scripting language (like JavaScript) to insert a random quote each time the page is refreshed (or upon each unique hit).

You can find various java scripts on the web that will do just what you want. Just do a search for free java scripts, you will find several, then it's just copy and paste into your HTML.
