I think, and this thread proves, that most Americans have no idea what they're talking about when they talk about Iran.

I think that this thread proves that most Americans don't understand how to separate a people from its government (thus their inability to understand how criticizing the president isn't the same as hating your country).

For those who want to know a little bit more about the people of Iran, here's a primer for you.

The vast majority of Iranians in college were too young to remember the Revolution of '79. The small freedoms they have been granted in that time has given them a taste for more. This has lead to a thriving pro-Democracy movement. Sadly, its effectiveness has been limited by the Ayatollahs. Even sadder, as a result of Bush's "axis of evil" speech, the Ayatollahs refused to let reformist candidates on the ballot. Thus, Bush helped create the ultra-conservative president that the Iranian people deal with now (lest you think all Iranians like him, think about how many Americans like Bush).

Many Iranian people are highly intelligent and they strive to peacefully overturn the religious regime and introduce a Western-style democractic form of government to their nation. Many members of the Persian community in the US fled the '79 revolution and send their money to campaigns to overthrow the Islamists.

It's too bad most Americans can't understand that differing religions don't make two people that different from each other. It's also too bad that the common ground between our peoples that seemed possible just five or six years ago now seems completely unreachable.

I recommend that people watch movies like "The White Balloon" and "The Color of Paradise". Both are simply portraits of families living in present-day Iran (one urban, one rural). It will make it easy to differentiate your opinions of a people from you opinions of their repressive government (and both films are rated G and suitable for the entire family).

Iran = an ambitious power always wanna spread its dominance in the gulf (the issue of the occupied Emirates islands as a real example, plans to possess nuclear weapons as a possible nightmare).

Iranian People = just like any other people have their dreams and fears, but I believe those who are affected by the Iranian propoganda view themselves as higher than others, the others as less civilised and less faithful, and should be ruled by them.

I think they are an oppressed country where their leaders feel they know whats best for their people but really don't as they have lost all to the almighty dollar or their religious beliefs. I don't think there is a single leader of a country who's interests are not involved with money or personal religious beliefs. but truly for the interests of the people. Growth means change and many countries fight change, especially that which is good for the people. Governments keep many things hidden from their people,
with excuses that they feel are right. But who is to say they are right. You cannot blame a whole country for their leaderships way of doing things. Quite a few countries do not allow their citizens the right to express themselves without fear of reprisals.
Big business rules the world anymore.

I'm thinking the Iranian people are hoping the world can keep a cool head until they figure out what the hell to do about that loon that is currently leading their country before he does something utterly stupid and causes massive loss of life.

They're just normal people trying to lead normal lives. Never let the actions of a few people cloud your judgement over the entire nation. Honestly, how many of you actually know any Iranian people. Judge not if you don't want to be judged yourselves.

I think the Iranian people are generally good. I don't like their current president at all. I also think having religious leaders as your supreme leader is a bad idea.

After working for 1 of them, they really need to go back to Iran. They hate us, and laugh at us, beside we are STUPID enough to let them come in to our country, take all of our land and money. And no one stops them. The send their money to Africa to a hidden account so it can not be traced. That money is to supply their terrorist that are hidden in the states, and our countries.

Considering that every Friday after their afternoon prayers, they hold rallies where they chant death to america while waving banners that demand the same, it think they are loveable jovial bunch and I would like to have them over for dinner sometime. Just kidding about the loveable, jovial and dinner parts.
I say death to the Iranian wackos!!!!!

I think they are a stubborn nation of people who have a long history of deception and violence against other nations with no agenda except revenge and domination.

Which could describe America except, USA rebuilds the countries they make submit to it, and offers so much foreign aid that other countries DEPEND on AMERICA for SURVIVAL!
