For the record I'm Scottish and my partner is Brazilian.

Two excellent football teams went out of the world cup yesterday. Both teams played fair in the main and went out with dignity. No teddy bears were thrown out of prams. Although both teams commit occasional unsporting acts (including one very obvious one yesterday), you have to say both show a high standard of sportsmanship, and when on form, are a delight to watch.

Now - I'm Scottish - so is this somehow an act of betrayal to say this? Do I need to react to a few crazed English fans who think that their general footballing success is somehow a re-enactment of Culloden, by descending to their level, or joining in with a few crazed Scots who think yesterday was a rerun of Bannockburn?

Bugger that. If we believe Scotland is a nation, let's behave like we believe it. If we have national pride and dignity, let's show it by growing up

A detail added especially for deirdre: my partner is female. I am male. What the flying fcuck that has to do with the question is beyond me. Allow me to lift your rock while you crawl back under. Jeeeeezzus wept....

I completely agree with your views and sentiments. You are obviously a gentleman and a sportsman. These days the likes of us are getting thin on the ground, and many sports, escpecially those with too much money, are dominated by overpaid players and brainless hooligans.

Your spot on mate and I'm another Scot,
The thing that get's up our noses most is the commentators not the English Team, Who if they had A BETTER Coach, Could have Won the World Cup
Also to the other poster who said ALL Scots hate the English, and don't see themselve as British, You're totally wrong, especially in Glasgow where I'm from, infact at the VERY least HALF would/are proud to call themselves British

I remember a world cup a few years back when Scotland qualified and not England.... I still remember the emotion of that last game and Andy Gray as Scotland went home on goal difference.. We all stood behind Scotland because down here we call ourselves "British"... unfortunately the Scots don't think that way.... yes two good teams went out, but . there can only be one winner... It's sport, that's what it's about, and I'm proud of our nation, proud to be English... At least we were there....

Culloden? whats that? I understand that Scots think that the English media is arrogant, but do you think that we like it? OK we haven't got the nationalism issue that the Scots have, but the repetitive use of predictable clichés the wingeing about the fitness or ability to play of the team the fuss over a few stars drives me nuts if I pay to much attention to it! and yes they do mention 1966 a little to often!
