Thanks for all of your respones. Yes, it is only a hamster & I am not looking for $. I think it is only fair to all parents who buy a hamster for their kid, that they are informed that cedar chips will kill their kid's pet. I was a kid once, & though I was never a hamster, I feel I have a resposibility to the animals I take into my home. Again ,thanks for all of your help. :0)

Is there something such as the Advertising standards agency?

Also I don't know where you are by the UK Sale of Goods act requires products to be 'Fit for Purpose'

Most bags of cedar and pine shavings mention tey can be used for hamsters and other small mammals, and indeed they can. They are not GOOD for the animals, but they can be used for them.

The real problem here is that owners do not take the time to research their pets needs, and it is not the shavings maker's jobs to educate the owners.

It is not just pine shavings. About 90% of the pets sold in the US will die well before they should because the owners do not really have a clue of how to care for it well, or cannot be bothered to treat them right even if they know.

Cats and dogs have it far luckier, but even they suffer from people who can't be bothered doing things the right way!

You might have a case. I would definitely get either on the web, or start calling a lawyer. If they are aware of this potentially dangerous side affect, then, they need to state this on the bag. Sorry for your hamster. Have you taken your hamster to the vet?? I would, because, you would have documentation from a vet stating the cause of his/her illness.

you have my sympathy, we raised the cutest baby squirrel on a bottle and just when we had her eating on her own my son changed the bedding in her cage and she died (we had her in aquarium with cage top) ours wasn't the cedar chips, it was
scented shavings for small animals later we discovered in the fine print that it was not used in an "enclosed habitat" only for
open cages PRINT ON PACKAGE SHOULD HAVE BEEN LARGER AND ON FRONT OF PACKAGE
