If you can...use an ATM abroad to get foreign currency. Exchange kiosks are expensive and your bank will give you the best rate.
And it's safer than carrying all that cash

It depends where and who you go to. Because money exchange businesses make their money on a percentage of your money, they can charge more or less and it doesn't have anything to do with the currency exchange rate. The numbers they displayed are very confusing, so I guess you just have to shop and compare the rate before you do any kind of transactions. Usually, if you exchange money from the locals or someone you know abroad, you can get some very good deals.

Based on my experience, it is okay to exchange money abroad. Although, you may have security concerns in that department. Exchanging in your own country is okay but they are generally higher exchange rates where we come from as compared to where we are going.

usually abroad. the value changes all the time, you don't want to exchange all of your money at once. i usually exchange $100 at a time because sometimes i can get it for more than the $100 before.

if you live in the States I believe you will enjoy a more favorable exchange rate and discount at home.

You have to shop around for the best rate and the conversion fee...some banks if you hold accounts with them will give you a large discount...
