Knowing how to lose, and even knowing how to win.

Determination is definitely one.

Not giving up the sport after you get injured.

Sacrificing things (maybe junk food) for your sport

Not giving up when you just want to fall asleep during a race (especially long distance races)

Someone that helps other when they are struggling

Knowing how to take a compliment

Just having a good overall attitude is key

Self-belief. Also a determined mindset, like the England rugby team had for the 2003 World Cup. Their mantra was something like " we win no matter what happens. "

Player gets injured? We still win.
Player gets sent off? We still win.
Referee is biased? We still win.
Game goes to penalties? We still win.
Tennis racket gets broken? I still win.
Blisters on feet? I still win.

Something like this. Also a clear vision in mind will sort out the winners from the also-rans. You find in knock-out sports in particular, the team which wins the final, is the won who THERE TO WIN and won't be happy until they have done. Whereas the runner-up is the one who is 'just happy to be there' or whose vision has been to 'just get to the final' rather than win it outright.
