My baby gets very mucky in the creases of her neck. Whats the nicest & safest way to clean her neck? Also she tenses up when I bend her head back gently to get better access, any ideas?

I got the cleaning part sussed! I'm just worried about not drying the area after, as it could lead to sores & infection. I use talc but when I go to clean her neck I find lumps of wet talc & its smells bad!!!
Wouldn't creams & lotions still make the neck wet & damp for a while afterwards?

take a baby wipe and put it in warm water, and simply wipe it all away. She will tense as she doesn't know what's behind her...keep in mind she's just a baby and has not yet figured out it's ok to trust mom ;)

Use a soft rag, and some johnson & johnson baby wash...or whatever brand you use. Don't use a lot of the soap though..dilute in in warm water. Just be gentle and clean well. Let air dry or use just a little bit of baby powder to dry more. Don't put anything else on it if she is starting to get red under there, or even if she has sores. If she is getting sores clean it more often.

My baby was chunky, and I had to clean her neck often...still do!

She may tense up, because it hurts her. After she drinks or eats make sure to clean then, too.

FYI.....baby oil or lotion will keep the skin moist and you don't want that! It needs to be dry under there so that it can heal!

Yeah, I hate that. Milk will get trapped in there and start to smell after an hour or so! Im not sure there is a nice way to do it, just dont hurt the baby and if they cry anyways, oh well! I use a baby wipe several times a day to clean my daughters neck and I do it while I am changing her diaper. I gently lift her neck up by her chin and wipe quickly. Sometimes she cries, sometimes she doesnt!

I had the same problem with my baby. A cotton ball and tiny bit of baby soap will help. I actually asked the doctor about it and they say it is good to get it checked out because it could cause a staff infection. We were told to get lotrimin and they also gave us a perscription to use for a few days. It wasn't bad but they did it just to be safe. Just try wiping it gently after she eats, and make sure she has a bib. It will go away soon!

Just dry between her creases with cotton wool until dry, don't rub too hard, just go gently.

Not drying properly caught me out when my son who was newborn too, and he got terribly red and sore so my health visitor said to dry with cotton wool as towels are sometimes too rough.

I was told NEVER to use talcum powder on young babies because of the creases and the danger that they might inhale the ttalc, so best put this out of the way until the baby is a bit older.

I would suggest you use cotton wool with some Johnson's baby cream and wipe very gently but firmly.

She might be tense because wiping her neck touches her wind pipe and it might feel as if she can't breath c;early for a short while. (I have just tried touching my own neck and it does feel a bit scary, especially if you imagine someone else doing it, even if they are the best mom!)

I also suggest lying her gently on her back, on your lap, with her head facing away from you. Her head will naturally fall back a little, and you can support her with your knees and one hand, while you wipe with the other.

To help her to relax, try singing to her - it worked with my hyper-active baby son. Babies are usually mesmerised and happy when their mommy sings to them.

as far as drying her neck after you clean it there is no nice way to do it. if she cries let her cry. your just gonna have to hold her head back (gently push up on her chin) use a vary soft towel a pat her skin until it is dry. don't rub her skin that is what can cause it to become raw. just pat the skin until it is dry and your good to go. once she realizes that its not gonna hurt and gets use to the idea of this being don't and what is going to happen as you do this shes more than like stop crying.

my son had the same smelly problem in other folds as well as his neck. The only thing to do is clean the area frequently. At least twice a day. As your child gets older and begins to move around this problem should go away.

Clean a face towel, make sure it is damp, then gently slide it over your baby's neck, in a soft caressing way. Make sure that you are gentle all the way through, do not rub too hard nor tilt her head too far. :)

Don't EVER use talc on a baby... Dries out the skin...

When you have washed the folds, try rubbing on baby oil to keep the skin healthy...
