Wow, there are a lot of good ones. I would recommend these:
Fruits Basket
Cardcaptor Sakura
Alice 19th
Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles
Vampire Game
Someday's Dreamers
Tarot Cafe
Full Metal Alchemist
Xxxholic
Tsubasa and Xxxholic crossover occasionally but not so much that it would be hard to understand one without the other. They are pretty different stories so even if you got both you wouldn't be getting repeated stuff all the time *two of my favorite works by CLAMP along with Cardcaptor Sakura*. You may want to start off with CLAMP works like Cardcaptor Sakura first so that when they reappear in the alternate reality piece Tsubasa you'll already know about the characters. I just wanted to point these two out because they are the most recent works by CLAMP and still on going.
Viz Media publishes two manga magazines called Shonen Jump and Shojo Beat. They features serialized chapters of popular manga series as well as contests, fanart and fun articles. Shonen Jump is the action/adventure comic and Shojo Beat is the romance/fantasy comic--basically. There are elements of both in each. The series in these magazines can also be found in book (manga) form. I listed the links to the Shonen Jump and Shojo Beat manga pages for more novels for you check out. I recommend trying out from Shonen Jump Rurouni Kenshin, Bleach and the Prince of Tennis. From Shojo Beat I recommend trying out Absolute Boyfriend, Nana, and Fushigi Yugi: Genbu Kaiden.
Shonen Jump advanced has just released a new series called D Gray Man. Very interesting so far!
Viz also produces film/anime comics which are anime series and movies made into color comics. Movies like Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle have been made into comics by them for example.
Have fun reading!

Well if you like the Romance sorta thing, and some of these include some fantasy or comedy(but all great!), then DEFINATELY try Fruits Basket, Kare Kano,D.N.Angel,Honey Mustard,Hana Kimi,or Forbidden Dance. If you like something more fantasy BASED, then definately try .Hack . I'm not all into fantasy(without romance,I love the romance though lol), but when I read .Hack it really pulled me in and I love it!. Well I hope I helped you out some! Good Luck!

Bleach for adventure, Hana kimi, fushigi yuugi, for romance. What i really recommend is hikaru no go, makes ur heart jump due to the suspense, although it's on an unlikely subject go(a boardgame)

Try Rouroni Kenshin, Ramna 1/2, Fishugi Yuugi, Inuyasha, and maybe Naruto. That should get you started. You might have some manga at your local library, it depends where you live, so check that out. And try Shonan Jump, it's a manga magazine, with some good stories.

first, i dopn't want to sound like a purist, but anime is the TV version, manga is the comic book version.
second; some nice intro manga are:
inuyasha
naruto
CLAMP school detectives
Fruits basket
Sailor moon
these manga are not based on my peersonal preferences, but i have read all of them and they are a good way to begin too immerce yourself in anime and manga. They are also very popular, so you won't have much trouble finding other people who are into them and making freinds! ^^
enjoy!

Naruto is nice, i also like Neon Genesis Evangelion, I especially reccomend Gundam Wing Episode Zero. Maybe Fruits Basket.
And by the way, the comics are not called anime(animated cartoons), they are called manga.

Cronicle of Wings. Not sure if you're going to like it but it's pretty cool. CLAMP combined all the anime and manga characters that they made to make this manga.
