Why is California so rich?

Hi guys,

Have you been to the city of Irvine? West L.A.? Coastal cities? Everywhere we go, we see prosperity.

I always wanted ask the question, why is California so rich?

Or what industry, business, or any other economical activities make California rich?

California is the center of the biggest american high-tech industries, the american entertainment industry, three major ports to asia (San Fran, LA, San Diego) which is where our first and third greatest trade partners (China [including Taiwan] and Japan) lie, it has a large population and a huge agricultural industry (although it is slowly withering) thanks to vineyards, citris plants, etc. There is also the tendancy of wealthy US residents moving here which adds to the taxes and general income of the state. And just to correct you're little trivia tidbit: California is the fifth largest economy in the world, not the fifteenth. On the flipside their are regions of great poverty and despair within California such as South Central LA, San Bernadino, Compton, etc. and our education system (basic k-12, not extended) is 48th in the nation.

Ever hear of the "land of opportunity?" Not just California, but most parts of the US have large pockets of wealth where people have the OPPORTUNITY to create wealth for themselves through free enterprise and a free society.

Of course, there is the flip side of the coin... Even California has area of devastating squalor. This is one of our great social issues of the day. Whose responsibility is it to look after those who are either unwilling or unable to take advantage of the opportunities available to all?

Because we knows how to party ^_^ i heard my government teacher say that if california is a country by it self it would have the 15th largest economy in the world

California has Hollywood, Silicon Valley, and the old days they have gold and oil.
