I adore Placebo. What I especially love about them is that they are able to have a distinct sound, but they are also able to change and grow with every album they put out. They are also never afraid to experiment, which is awesome for a band.
I also love their lyrics. Especially the lyrics to My Sweet Prince. I know its one of their older songs, but I think its my favorite [even though choosing just one is so hard!]. That song is lovely, but tackles the issue of drug addiction - or, really, addiction of any kind. Its a really well-written song, I think.
Hm, as for similiar bands... Well, I'm not sure this band actually sounds a lot like Placebo, but I know a lot of Placebo fans who like them: Manic Street Preachers. I would definitely suggest checking them out if you've never heard them. Mostly their earlier stuff - that's definitely more Placebo-like.
Also, their ability to experiment reminds me of Radiohead. They also vaguely remind me of Cat Power, Nine Inch Nails, Louis XIV, Peaches, and Dresden Dolls. And, of course, they remind me A LOT of the old glam singers/bands - and not just because of the makeup. Mostly singers like Bowie, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, etc.

Despite being broad in scope , their music has a deep message attached thereto e.g. their new song :"Bcoz I Want You". I'll quote "Fall into u, is all I seem to do, When I hit the bottle, coz I'm afraid to be alone. Tear us in 2, is all it seems to do..." In those few sentences, they tackle issues of love, depression, heartbreak and alcoholism. If u listen, if u introspect - That song could save your relationship or even your life. Despite the raw guitars, melancholic chords and crazy outfits, these guys are just rock priests, spreading a deep gospel of responsible living and loving. Such is their music.
For similar groups, try Nivarna, M, Radiohead, Interpol and Stereophonics.
Viva el Placebo!.
Enjoy
