Did they carry personal arms with them, e.g. a gun, I'm writing something about them. People say that naval officers don't usually carry guns, so can anyone tell me how they protected themselves if the ship was boarded by the enemy? (No silly answers, please...I'm being quite serious)

to augment Steve N answer..yes sub crews carried small arms; a U boat officer would carry a Luger; there were occasions early in the war when German subs would surface, force a ship to stop send a boarding party over to determine if the ship was legit target....such were the rules of war at the time; as you imagine, US, German, Brit and Jap subs soon stopped doing that and shot without warning......there was one actual occurrence of hand to hand fighting between a US destroyer and a U boat..........look up USS Bulkeley in Google....she forced a U boat to the surface, rammed it; while along side sailors on both ships shot at each other with small arms,,,,,,and even threw wrenches......for the first time since the war of 1812 the order "All Hands Repel Boarders " was given, so your scenario could have happened

Ex-submariner USA. We carried a variety of small arms, shotguns, and automatic weapons on board. In port, there are always armed crew members on duty as guards. Underway, the weapons are stored. Nonetheless, during WWII, submarines needed to surface much more often than that do today and there are instances where subs were boarded or boarding was attempted. As such, officers and crew members on watch would be armed while at the surface for any length of time (usually to recharge their batteries, exchange air, and refuel).

All military vessels have firearms stored in arms lockers. The chances of a U-boat getting boarded is about nil. It will probably go down fighting and sink before anything else.

I think that they might have had a pistol, but if they were ever boarded they would instead of trying to get to a locker containing a pistol they would try to fight with fists or surrender.

Maybe a wrench could be used for striking the head.

Yes pistols. The ships didn't get boarded. Kamikazis tried to board the ship with their plane but they exploded on landing or impact.

actual, i will't write with my left hand in any respect! yet I do an excellent kind of issues with my left hand, curiously i'm left hand eye co-ordinated. Or actual, whichever is the different of what actual handers must be! I open doorways, carry bags and do maximum stuff with my left hand.
