Apart from the obvious being able to make weapons, the ability to make tools and fire has enabled man to build, protective structures, traps, bridges over water and boats. This gave man mastery over his environment, to be able to go where he wants and protect himself from other animals. Tools for farming breaking the soil meant more food instead of foraging. This leads to survival of the fittest or more prepared being able to store food for the winter months. Once you start with one type of tool this leads to making other types of more specialist tools, then the need for stronger materials, which in turn leads to bigger and better tools. With each surge in inventiveness of tools came a different era in mans history.

all of the great apes use tools...the orangutans fashion straws at various lengths depending on the season and need for length...also chimps use rocks to crack open nuts, as well as "highly advanced" hunting tactics. Gorillas use various sticks for manuevering through peat bogs and are able to choose the appropiate size. I would have to say bipedalism is far more important, because it enabled tool use.

It has been proven that birds can take twigs and break them so that they can reach down into a cup and pull out a smaller cup by a loop on top of it so that they can get to the food in the smaller cup. Isn't that making and using tools? Guess humans are as intelligent as bird brains.
