Best thing to do is email them to their phone a short message. For instance i have a cingular and tmobile phone. My email to go to my phone is number@tmomail.net (123456789@tmomail.net and thats similar to cingular. So check with their service provider and see what they use for email to cellphone messages. Alternatively a blackberry will solve all the problems.

tell your students or those you want to have sms alerts to get a Yahoo! account and register their mobile phone at mobile.yahoo.com. However, some carriers like Cricket do not support sms service via Yahoo! but you can go to www.mycricket.com and send each one an individual sms. Yes it's tedious, but until Yahoo! get's an aggrement from Cricket, thats the only way I can think of.

Most carriers have an email gateway for SMS... Just add a CC: to the emails that use this SMS alias. If unsure about the syntax for your particular carrier, contact them for this info... For example, here in US, one such alias (for verizon) is telno@myvzw.com where telno is the person's actual cellular phone number.
