Well, if you shoot one and the other four run away, and you shoot them all in the back, then that's legally excessive (but morally acceptable).
But barring no Saturday Night special tucked into your coat pocket I'd say pretty much anything you have to do to get away is okay.
Let's say one person attacks you. If you punch him in the face and break his jaw and run away, that's fine. But if you keep fighting back while your assailant is down then that is considered excessive. When you're dealing with five, the authorities may be more understanding that you needed to make sure your attackers stayed down.
You might want to head to your library and do a little research in old newspapers on any swarming cases involving youths. Earlier cases will set a presedence. But if they attacked you sometime ago and you're going to seek them out Steven Segal style, well yeah, that's excessive force and, unfortunately, illegal.
