Ignorance and fear of someone different. Lack of self-esteem, self-confidence and self-respect. They want to put down others to raise their own pathetic feelings.

I believe the single biggest influence of a racist individual is probably family. It starts by listening to their parents using crude language and slurs about another race. Another factor may be a bad experience with a person of another race. This would go under the ignorance category. I've had bad experiences with individuals of all races, should I hate everybody? I believe media can also play a part, they feed off of riots, Rodney King, LAPD, OJ Simpson and other isolated incidents of racism. Then they get people asking what's wrong with America? America for the most part is fine, but we do have our share of headcases.

People are comfortable with the familiar and uncomfortable with the unfamiliar. Instead of branching out and exploring things unknown, many prefer to stay within their closed system and stick with the status quo. In some cases, though, the media plays a part in helping to perpetrate stereotypes about specific groups which keeps the hatred going.

I think many people are presumed racist when in fact often they are merely proud of their race/culture.

However to the core of your query I would say some people feel they have the right to choose whom they associate with by their own individual preferences however right or wrong the basis for doing so.

well it seems that some people just live their life looking for a reason to be offended, and angry and hate.

IT IS REALLY A WASTE OF TIME BEING RACIST, YET SOME I THINK DO IT AS A HOBBY, A WAY OF LIFE, INSTEAD OF LOOKING FOR WHAT WOULD SEEM A GOOD MEANFUL LIFE, THEY LOOK FOR A CAUSE, AND USUALLY SOMEONE HAS TO BE THE GOOD GUY AND SOMEONE HAS TO BE THE BAD GUY..OR GAL .. FEAR IS ANOTHER REASON, AND SOME PEOPLE DO NOT LIKE CHANG,E THEY CONSIDER THIS A THREAT,, IT IS A SHAME,

People are racist because they don't socialize outside there race. If they did, they would find that we are all basically the same, just diffent cultural backgrounds....

People are racist because they are afraid of other cultures....

Fear. People fear what they don't encounter everyday. I encounter all colors every day. Not races. There is only one "race." The human race. I wish people would be more understanding, but that's human nature for you.
