An alloy is a material made from more than one element so it can be tailored for a specific purpose. Straight up materials, such as iron can only do what comes naturally to them. Not very scientific, but there you go. You now need to find examples of both and their usage, maybe find something that was replaced and improved by an alloy. This example goes back ages - think about the transition of the Iron age into the Bronze age. Try to find a contemporary example to add depth to your research.
