Wasn't that before most lines of Kings were established ? Basically Lords ruled various areas of what became countries ?
Or are you talking later ? Say the 1300's or so ?

In England it was mainly castles and churches.
The Normans built lots of both to start off with.
Then Edward I built lots of castles throughout England and Wales, and the Bishops and abbots had lots of monasteries and abbeys like Fountains and Rievaulx built as well as the great cathedrals that can be seen in many English cities.
This was pretty much the same in many European countries as well.
