A catastrophic loss is when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, or when 4 planes went down on 9/11 killing thousands of innocent people. Or when a great big wave comes in and wipes out an Island. All that's left after that is counting bodies and cleaning the mess left behind.

Catastrophic means: disastrous, shattering, calamitous, appalling, terrible, ruinous, tragic, cataclysmic
obviously, loss means to lose something or someone
Take a war. I would say that a war is a catastrophic loss of people, time & political minds.

i would say a loss that you can't recover from. A loss that ENDs or kills something/or someone.
